How to Accomplish an Eclectic Exterior Design

Many people are interested in creating an eclectic exterior design for their home, as such houses show better curb appeal and a more unique atmosphere. But it is important to remember that no matter how well curb appeal and uniqueness is achieved, no home will be truly unique unless you choose the colors and materials that suit your style, needs, and budget. If you need help choosing the right materials and colors for your home, here are three suggestions for creating an eclectic exterior design.

Tips for Creating a Smoother Outdoor Space

Trimming away unnecessary branches, trees, or shrubs will help you create a more seamless outdoor space. In doing so, you can free up valuable space in the center of your house to make room for fixtures such as fire pits, water fountains, and trellises. Trimming away redundant shrubs or trees can also help to make your front porch or back yard appear larger and airy. Your landscapers should be able to help you accomplish these tasks through professional landscape trimming.

Consider installing a framed skylight on your house plan. A skylight lets natural light in, while simultaneously providing ample ventilation. This can be particularly beneficial during cold winter months when the sun cannot shine through all the windows. Similarly, consider installing a fiberglass or metal skylight instead of a framed wood-and-mortar one. You can choose a different color and material for each window or install skylights with honeycomb-patterned roofs. Installing skylights is also easier than some other options, and you don't have to have your windows framed locally.

Considering For Window Colors

If you do not want to install skylights, consider window tinting your windows instead. Many skylights are already tinted, and window tints can be applied to concrete or sheet rock. In addition, many newer buildings employ double-paned glass to reduce heat loss and increase overall UV protection. Additionally, window tints can be applied to brick or stone facades, or to concrete walkways. Installing tinted glass or window tints is a relatively simple project.

This option involves constructing a raised, detailed mold of your existing foundation walls and then placing skylights above the molds. If you do not have molds, or if you are interested in incorporating fancier materials, consider constructing raised beams by detailing a new wall with mild steel mesh. To make the beamed beams, cut the mesh to fit along the base of the frame, and then place plywood or lumber along the sides. Drill holes in the mesh, and then place hinges in place to hold the mesh in place. Finish by adding detail fabric along the inside of the beams to hide the steel.

Quick Ways to Finish an Eclectic Exterior

To finish off this eclectic exterior, add a number of skylights above the foundation plan sheet. The most common places to install skylights are on the walls and/or floors beneath the eaves. A skylight installation is straightforward; simply mark the location on your foundation plan sheet where you would like the skylight to go. Skylights are available in many different shapes, sizes, and materials, so be sure that you choose one that will work well with your existing foundation walls.

This is an easy way to create a unique design for your home. Simply follow your existing floor plan, and add an "outside" border to your existing foundation walls. Mark the location on your foundation walls where you would like the border to run. Draw a cover sheet or schedule sheet to match the shape of the border, and affix them to your existing foundation walls. This solution works well if you plan to cover the wall before finishing the details on the front and back.

After your floor plan shows your layout, the next step is to cut out the beams, columns, and other relevant details to build your new exterior walls. Mark the location on your floor plan sheet where you would like the first beam, wall, or column to go. Draw or cut out the beams and columns on your floor plan sheet by following the plan shown in the floor plan. Cut the first beam on the correct location by following the steps in the illustration. Then, put all of your cut beams and columns into place on the front and back of your home.
